Why Orange?

The Neko Rig gets a new look!

The past few years we have tinkered with various colors with the Neko button head weight. Some say that color doesn’t make a difference. Others say it does. For a few years we used green pumpkin, watermelon with red flake, black, and some chartreuse in murky water. They all seemed to work. We then added a multitude of other colors which seemed to catch fish as well.

A friend asked me to paint some orange heads so I ordered a “Disco Orange” color. It seemed to work great! In fact I was catching more fish than ever before! But then I got an idea. Why not see if there was an even brighter orange? Sure enough, there was and we ordered “Blaze Orange” which is very bright when painted on the button head weights.

Disco orange is a great color to use with the Neko rig when the water is a bit clearer from our observations.

Now, why orange? After visiting with some very reputable anglers across the country most agreed that the small amount of orange at the end of the ZMan Fishing Products Big TRD resembles the belly of a bluegill in full spawn mode. It may be a trigger for getting big bass to bite and for that matter, any bass to bite.

From my own personal observations it’s been an incredible month of fishing catching more than 300 bass in the past couple of weeks using this color. The 1/16th oz weight seems to work better as it has a slower fall rate. To break it down even further the “Disco Orange” color seems to work better in clearer water and in dirty water the “Blaze Orange” is dynamite. Once the word got out about it we have been painting orange Neko weights by the hundreds the past few days! The orders keep coming in and it will be interesting to see how they work for anglers all across the country.

In addition to the Neko button head we also use the TK-137 Size 2 Trokar Finesse Hook. It takes less power for penetration than traditional finesse hooks and locks the fish on after the bite. We also use the “Snyder Sleeve” to keep the hook attached better to the worm. With over 2,000 bass caught this year mostly on this bait you can’t go wrong either!
