Rigging a Neko Worm
Simple steps for creating this every effective presentation to catch more fish!
Fast becoming one of the most popular presentations to catch fish is the Neko Rig. There are a myriad of ways to rig this very effective lure and we will show you one here that has proven results. The key to your success is with the Neko presentation is how you rig it. This simple modification that will help keep your bait on the hook will make a huge difference in your fishing success!
What you will need to get started are a ZMan Fishing Products Big TRD, Senko, or Yum Dinger. The two main colors we use are Green Pumpkin and Molten Craw in clearer water and darker colors like June Bug or Black/Blue in dirty or extremely stained water. They come in a package of 6 worms. Other items include heat shrink, a Neko Lead Weight, Hook, lighter, pliers, and some Gel Super Glue.
The setup is very easy to create and for the most part a worm can last the entire day of fishing if not snagged or lost by other means. After creating literally hundreds if not thousands of these rigs through the years this presentation has become a staple in my lineup of presentations for mainly bass fishing. You can catch walleye, catfish, bluegill, crappie, muskie, and just about any other fish with gills swimming in freshwater lakes and streams. It is especially effective for all species of bass including spots, largemouth, and smallmouth.
First, you will need to heat up the nail weight to insert in the elaztec as it is very plyable. Be sure to hold it with pliers so you don’t burn your fingers. The other precautionary measure is to keep the flame away from the painted head as it will melt very quickly. You only need to heat it up for a few seconds and then quickly insert it into the blunt end of the worm. It may take a couple of tries. After getting the Neko weight inserted you then pull it back out and place a couple of very small dabs of super glue on the nail. Reinsert it and push on the worm to make a snug fit.
After the Neko weight is inserted you then place your O-Ring or Heat Shrink on the worm. This is very easy to do as shown in the video included here. You can also stretch out the worm to give it a more realistic look if it is elaztek. After this step you can then insert the hook through the worm underneath the Heat Shrink or O-Ring. You can also just skin hook the worm but this method will usually not last very long once a fish is caught and head shakes it off the hook.
Here is a video that shows you the whole process…
You can easily make a few of these in just minutes and be ready to hit the water to catch a ton of fish with it!
