There are limitless advantages of using a kayak to fish streams, lakes, rivers, and oceans. And yes, of course, there are limitations. But let’s look at an advantage of a kayak when fishing docks.
This past week I was fishing a small lake in Iowa and there was a row of docks with water from 1 to 5 feet. A perfect place for bass to ambush prey! I came up to a couple of docks that were built very close to each other and casted into the gap of them. Sure enough, I got bit right away! Of course, someone could fish from the shoreline and get there too but that would be from private property. As long as I was on the water I’m not trespassing so it was worth the cast. The fish took off quickly and got ahead of me. It wrapped up on one of the dock posts and with the kayak I was able to get back there to see if I could get it free. As luck would have it the fish escaped and I was left with a bent hook.
The mistake I made was to not be in position to hook into a fish and power it up right away. I could have stealthily positioned my kayak further in the gap and then made the cast. Where I casted from was also where a boat would be able to do as well. The kayak can get you much closer to your target area. A lot of times I get fish right below me to bite in tight spaces like this one. Whether it’s trees, brush, docks, or behind laydowns your kayak will get you there to catch fish that are ready to bite.
